inatura nature experience Dornbirn
Hands-on natural history museum in the old Rüsch works: live animals, a 4 m relief of Vorarlberg, science zones – daily 10 am–6 pm, 10 % off with the Montafon guest card.
The inatura is the classic rainy-day outing for families in Vorarlberg. It occupies the halls of the former Rüsch engineering works by Dornbirn's Stadtgarten – factory halls dating from 1858 to 1897, converted by the architects Dietrich, Kaufmann, Lenz and Untertrifaller and opened in 2003. Over roughly 3,000 m² the route leads through three habitats: mountains with a four-metre relief of Vorarlberg, a climbing wall and terrariums; forest and meadow with wolf, fox and wild boar, an underground tunnel system and live bees, ants and bank voles; and finally water, with a large aquarium full of fish from the Rhine and Lake Constance. Add the walk-through “Wunder Mensch” on the human body and the Science Zones with experiments – almost everything may be touched and tried out. In 2025 the museum counted more than 130,000 visitors. The whole museum is step-free, and the audio guide comes free via an app.
It is open daily 10 am–6 pm, including public holidays. Adults pay €14, children aged 6 to 15 €6.90, a family with two children €32.20; the Montafon guest card gives 10 % off, and the ticket also covers the Kunstraum Dornbirn in the assembly hall next door. From our house it is 66 km or 54 minutes via the A14 (exit Dornbirn West); by train take the S4 to Bludenz and continue to Dornbirn, and from the station city bus 207 takes you to the inatura stop. Allow three to four hours; afterwards the market square with the Rotes Haus of 1639 beckons.
