Location & Travel
Quietly located on the sunny slope of Gortipohl/Außergant in St. Gallenkirch, 600 m from the Garfrescha cable car – yet five minutes from the village centre.
The location
The holiday house and bungalow stand in Außergant, part of the hamlet of Gortipohl in the municipality of St. Gallenkirch, at around 900 m above sea level. The balcony looks out onto the Silvretta range with nothing in between. The valley station of the Garfrescha cable car – feeder into the Silvretta Montafon ski area and, in summer, the starting point for hikes to the Alpe Nova and the Nova valley – is 600 m away, about an eight-minute walk. Supermarket and bus stop are 400 m from the door.
St. Gallenkirch is the central village of the upper Montafon: Gargellen, Gaschurn and Partenen lie further up the valley or in the side valley, Schruns-Tschagguns with railway station, Hochjoch cable car and Aktivpark lie down the valley. All five ski areas and practically every destination in the valley are therefore no more than 25 minutes away by car.
By car
Take the A14 Rheintal/Walgau motorway to the Bludenz-Montafon exit, then follow the L188 Montafonerstraße through Schruns-Tschagguns to St. Gallenkirch (about 20 minutes from the motorway). In Gortipohl turn off at the Garfrescha cable car and follow Türkeiweg uphill. The A14 requires an Austrian motorway vignette (digital or sticker; a 10-day vignette is available online or at petrol stations before the border).
From Germany: via Munich–Bregenz (A96/A14) or Ulm–Memmingen–Lindau (A7/A96). From Switzerland: via Feldkirch or Bregenz. Winter tyres are compulsory in winter; snow chains should be on board, although Türkeiweg is cleared. The house offers three parking spaces and a garage (bungalow: garage close by).
Please note: the Silvretta High Alpine Road (Bielerhöhe) is closed on the Vorarlberg side after rockfalls, expected until 2030. From the Paznaun/Galtür the Montafon can currently only be reached via the Arlberg.
By train and bus
Take ÖBB trains (Railjet/EC from Vienna, Innsbruck, Zurich, Munich) to Bludenz and change to the Montafonerbahn to Schruns (every 30 minutes, 20 minutes). From Schruns station Landbus 650 runs to St. Gallenkirch–Gortipohl (stop 400 m from the house, approx. 15 minutes). Timetables and tickets: vmobil.at. By arrangement we are happy to pick you up at Schruns station.
By plane
The nearest airports are Zurich (about 2 hours by car, rail connection via Sargans–Feldkirch–Bludenz), Friedrichshafen (1 ½ hours), Memmingen (1 ¾ hours) and Innsbruck (2 hours over the Arlberg). Car hire is available at all four airports; the train from Zurich Airport to Bludenz takes around 2 ½ hours.
Getting around without a car
The Montafon works well without your own car: the Landbus runs every 30 minutes through the valley, supplemented in winter by ski buses that are free for guests with a ski pass. In summer the Freizeit-WildPass (the cable cars' multi-day pass) includes bus and train travel across the Vorarlberg network; the free Montafon guest card does not include tickets but gives discounts. See Transport & Parking for details.
