Alpengasthof Muttersberg

The Alpengasthof Muttersberg stands at 1,401 m right at the top station of the Muttersberg cable car, which floats up from Bludenz in 8 minutes to the sunny balcony above the Walgau. Cable car and inn were rebuilt together in 2001/02 and have belonged since 2012 to a group of investors from Bludenz (Muttersberg Seilbahn und Gastronomie GmbH). The house is big: three carved-wood dining rooms with around 350 seats, another 350 on the panorama terrace facing the Rätikon and the Lechquellen range, plus what it calls the largest indoor playroom in Vorarlberg, an outdoor playground, an art trail and a foot-cooling pool. The kitchen promises "regional before imported, fresh before preserved"; on Friday evenings there are mountain tapas until 10 pm. Dogs are welcome. English-language reviews praise the terrace, the view and fair prices.

Easy walks continue from the inn: the Madeisa loop (30 minutes), the panorama path to Nüziders (1¾ hours) or the climb to the Hoher Frassen (1,979 m, 1¾ hours according to the operator) with a stop at the Fraßenhütte. From our house you drive a good 30 km to Bludenz – or take bus 650 and the Montafonerbahn to Bludenz station, from where town bus 501 brings you to the valley station. Open Mon–Sun 9 am – 5 pm (hot food 11 am – 4 pm); in winter the cable car runs Friday to Sunday only.
