Kessl-Hütte

The Kessl-Hütte stands at around 1,750 m on the Gargellenalpe, a good kilometre west of the village centre of Gargellen on the Vergalda side, not far from the line of the Schafberg cable car. Hubert and Gabriela Neher run the small, rustic hut: hearty home cooking, fish specialities and game from their own hunt, plus a terrace with deckchairs, a nail-hammering game and a view of the Madrisa. In winter it is a ski hut at the end of the Täli family run on piste 6 – Dutch ski guides mention it as a stop "halverwege piste 6". There is no website of its own; best ask the hosts about winter opening hours.

In summer the nicest way to the Kessl-Hütte is on foot: from Gargellen (1,408 m) along a gravel track in just under an hour, as a loop over the Gargellenalpe (4 km, a good 1½ hours) or as part of the Three Alps circuit from the Obwaldhütte (30 minutes); the walk to the Rongg waterfall can be added too (8 km, 3 hours). From our house take bus 670 for about 20 minutes or drive 10 km to Gargellen (free parking at the Schafberg cable car). Summer 2026: 27 June – 13 September, Monday, Tuesday and Thursday to Sunday 11 am – 4 pm, closed Wednesdays and in bad weather; hut evenings on request.

From Gargellen (bus 670, Schafberg cable car car park) along the gravel track towards the Gargellenalpe in just under an hour; in winter on skis via the Täli family run (piste 6).

Call ahead in unsettled weather – the hut opens depending on conditions. Bring cash. Closed Wednesdays.

Landbus 670 Schruns–St. Gallenkirch–Gargellen (hourly), stop Gargellen Schafberg cable car; approx. 20 min from St. Gallenkirch.
