Baroque church of Bartholomäberg

At around 1,090 m the parish church of St Bartholomew sits enthroned above the valley – Bartholomäberg is the oldest settlement in the Montafon, and its parish is regarded as the mother parish from which the others emerged. The Baroque building was begun in 1729 and consecrated in 1743: a hall with a recessed choir and a 38.5 m tower with an onion dome. Three treasures make the visit special. First, the miners' altar, a late-Gothic winged altarpiece from around 1525 endowed by the mine workers. Second, a Romanesque processional cross from Limoges dating from about 1150 – the original is kept by the Diocese of Feldkirch, and a copy stands in the church. Third, the organ built by Johann Michael Graß in 1792: 15 stops on a single manual, with an unusually large amount of original material and a sound that experts count among the finest of Austria's single-manual organs. Add the high altar by Georg Senn (1737) and the fresco of the Fourteen Holy Helpers by Michael Lorünser (1732).

From our house it is 14.9 km or 20 minutes; buses 640 and 641 stop at the church and there is parking right in front. Mass is on Sundays at 10 am, Wednesdays at 8 am and Fridays at 7 pm (as of 2026, Bartholomäberg municipality). The Frühmesshaus museum is right next door; the miners' trail leads up from the Litz chapel in Schruns and on to the historic mine.
