The upper Montafon lives from water – reservoirs, pressure tunnels and power stations of the Illwerke have shaped the landscape since the 1920s. The Aqua trail explains this at stations along the Ill: from the Rifa and Vermunt power plants via streams and floodplains to the waterfalls. Around 11 km, 190 m of elevation, 3½ hours on easy paths, can be shortened at will with the Landbus.

A good trail for changeable weather and for the technically minded; pushchairs manage large parts.

🧭 Route description

The route leads from Golmerbahn Mittelstation Latschau, Latschaustraße via Lünerseewerk, Illwerke vkw AG, Golmerbach, Mülli Ferdi, Wasserbrunnen, Verweilstation Bildstöckli, Ausblick auf das Tal, Lederquelle, Gampadels Bach, Stollen and Speicher Bitschweil and back to the starting point.

Start early – summer afternoons often bring thunderstorms. Carry enough water; many huts are only open from late June to late September.

From the holiday house in St. Gallenkirch the starting point is easy to reach by Landbus (stop 400 m away) or car – see the travel notes.

🚌 Getting there by public transport

Montafonerbahn to Vandans or Tschagguns, Landbus to the Golm cable car in Vandans/Latschau (Golm valley station). From St. Gallenkirch: bus 650 with change in Schruns.

Free parking at the Golm cable car in Vandans and in Latschau (mid station/Gauertal car park, partly paid in summer).
