The Madrisa (2,826 m) stands on the border, and the circuit around it is one of the great day hikes of the Montafon: from the summit station of the Gargellen cable cars over the Gafierjoch into the Madrisa area above Klosters and back over the Schlappiner Joch to Gargellen. Around 21 km, 1,000 m of ascent, 7 hours on marked mountain paths between 1,900 and 2,600 m – with smugglers’ stories, boundary stones, glacier views and a geology that English and German guides describe as particularly varied.

The tour demands fitness, sure footing and stable weather; as a two- or three-day variant with an overnight stay in Klosters it becomes a leisurely cross-border hike. Don’t forget your ID.

Start early – summer afternoons often bring thunderstorms. Carry enough water; many huts are only open from late June to late September.

From the holiday house in St. Gallenkirch the starting point is easy to reach by Landbus (stop 400 m away) or car – see the travel notes.
