The Montafon stone sheep is an old, almost vanished breed that is being bred again in the valley. The stone sheep trail leads from Gargellen across the alps where the animals graze in summer and explains breed, alpine farming and wool processing on boards. Around 10 km, 500 m of ascent, 3½ hours – moderate, with refreshments on the alps and views of the Madrisa and Rätikon.

A trail that appeals to children (animals!) and rewards adults with landscape; can be combined with the Schafberg cable car.

🧭 Route description

The route leads from Ortszentrum St. Gallenkirch via Widumstall, Schärma, Suggadin, Rütikapelle, Rüti, Gampaping, Neuberg and Boden and back to the starting point.

Start early – summer afternoons often bring thunderstorms. Carry enough water; many huts are only open from late June to late September.

From the holiday house in St. Gallenkirch the starting point is easy to reach by Landbus (stop 400 m away) or car – see the travel notes.
