Kristberg: leisure mountain, Silberpfad & miners' chapel

The Kristberg is the Montafon's quiet mountain: a sunny plateau at around 1,440 m between the Silbertal and Bartholomäberg, with views of the Rätikon and Verwall. The Kristberg cable car, an aerial tramway from 1988 with a 35-person cabin, climbs 555 m from Silbertal (889 m) in five minutes and in 2026 runs daily from 1 May to 1 November, 7.45 am to 6.15 pm – the longest summer season in the valley. Up top, much recalls the mining that gave the Silbertal its name: the miners' chapel of St Agatha, the oldest church in the Montafon, was built around 1400 and extended in 1507 with a porch and net vault; legend has it that miners trapped underground vowed to build it when they escaped. Inside are a double winged altar with panels from the 1470s and a wooden ceiling painted with the signs of the zodiac.

The Silberpfad, 2.7 km long with twelve stations and a free audio app, tells the mining story on a pushchair-friendly route and ends at a play area below the Panoramagasthof; easy circular walks lead to the Kristbergsattel and the Wildried high moor (1,540 m). In winter there is tobogganing to the middle station, winter walking trails and two small lifts for beginners. From our house it is 15.8 km / 23 minutes; by bus 650 to Schruns and Landbus 680 to the Kristbergbahn terminus. A return ticket costs €25 for adults and €14.40 for children (as of 2026); with the Freizeit-WildPass the cable car is included.
