Großvermuntalpe

The Großvermunt alp lies in the Großvermunt, the high-alpine head of the Montafon between the Vermunt and Silvretta reservoirs, below the great dam and not far from the Madlenerhaus. The area belongs to the municipality of Gaschurn, but the alp is run from the Galtür side – contact is via the municipality of Galtür. Alps in the Vermunt are already mentioned in the Bündner Urkundenbuch of 1089; cattle still summer here at around 1,750 to 2,000 m today, and alpine products are sold to hikers. Combined with a walk around the lake or a hut tour to the Wiesbadener or Saarbrücker hut, the alp makes a welcome stop away from the Bielerhöhe restaurants.

Important for planning: the Silvretta High Alpine Road on the Vorarlberg side is closed after rockfalls, probably until 2030. From our house you therefore drive 8 km to Partenen (bus 650, about 10 minutes) and continue by the Vermunt cable car and tunnel bus to the Bielerhöhe (summer 2026: 20 June to 4 October, ascents 8–12 and 13–16:30, last descent 17:00); about an hour in total. By car you can only come up from Tyrol via Galtür. From the Bielerhöhe (2,037 m) you reach the alp via the Madlenerhaus with a short descent – on the way back don't miss the last cable car down.

💡 Tips & refreshments

High-alpine location: even in high summer bring warm clothing and rain protection, the weather can change quickly. Staffed only in the alpine summer (roughly early June to mid-September); ask about opening times in advance (+43 5443 8210). The Vermunt cable car car park is closed in 2026 for construction work – use the alternative car parks in Partenen.

Landbus 650 to Partenen, then Vermunt cable car + tunnel bus to the Bielerhöhe (summer 2026: 20 June–4 Oct, uphill 8–12 and 13–16:30, last descent 17:00). Approx. 1 h in total from St. Gallenkirch.

Note: the Silvretta High Alpine Road is closed on the Vorarlberg side after rockfalls, expected until 2030 – car access only from Tyrol (Galtür). The Vermunt cable car car park in Partenen is closed in 2026 for construction; use alternative parking in Partenen village.
