Aktionsraum Naturgefahren Montafon

Anyone holidaying in the Montafon sees avalanche barriers, torrent dams and protective forest everywhere – the Aktionsraum Naturgefahren in Vandans explains why. In the new timber building at the depot of the torrent and avalanche control service (WLV) near the Golm cable car, the Montafon museums, the WLV, the Stand Montafon and the municipality of Vandans set up an exhibition on alpine natural hazards between 2022 and 2024, opened in May 2025. It deals with floods, avalanches, rockfall and landslides, with climate change and the role of protective forest, but also with concrete events such as the flood of 1910, which hit Vandans hard and marks the start of torrent control in the valley. The centrepiece is an interactive 3D model of the Montafon on which avalanches can be simulated; at audio and video stations, people affected and experts tell their stories. The space is intended above all for school classes, but also for families and visitors of all ages.

There is no open museum operation: visits are by appointment with the Montafon museums (+43 5556 74723), which charge a guided-tour flat rate. From our house it is 14.1 km or 18 minutes; take bus 650 to Schruns and the Montafonerbahn to Vandans, or bus 621/641 to Vandans Golmerbahn. Afterwards, head up the Golm or to the two churches at the Vandans cemetery.
