Montafon Mining Museum Silbertal

Why the valley is called Silbertal: 14th- to 16th-century silver, copper and iron mining in the old schoolhouse, with show tunnel and mine cart – under-18s free.

all year 👨‍👩‍👧 Family friendly 🍼 Stroller friendly 🌧️ Also in bad weather

The name Silbertal – silver valley – says it all: from the 14th to the 16th century silver, copper and iron were mined on the Kristberg and the Bartholomäberg, and the Montafon Mining Museum in the old 1920s schoolhouse explains that era. Its centrepiece is a small show tunnel with a mine cart and a miner figure, where children experience how narrow and dark a gallery is; alongside lie ores from the district, historic tools, photos and documents. The exhibition also asks how the miners lived, who the mining judge was and why mining ended around 1600. The museum has existed since 1996 and is regarded as an example of family-friendly museum work – there is a museum rally for children, and admission here is by voluntary contribution (the Montafon museums' combined ticket is valid too). Small changing exhibitions are devoted to village history.

It is open from 16 June to 26 October 2026, Tuesday to Friday and Sunday 2–5 pm. From our house it is 16 km or 20 minutes; take bus 650 to Schruns and the 680 on to Silbertal Zentrum – the museum shares the building with the municipal office, and the parish church with its 57 m tower stands opposite. The strongest combination: the museum first, then up by the Kristberg cable car to the Silberpfad trail and the miners' chapel of St Agatha, where the legend of the buried miners is set.
