Big Kristberg Loop

The Kristberg above Silbertal is a winter mountain without much skiing: a single cable car, a sunny plateau at around 1,440 m, 25 km of groomed and cleared winter trails, a 9.3 km panorama cross-country loop, a toboggan run and snowshoe routes – the operator calls it the “Genießerberg”, the mountain for taking it easy. The big loop starts at the cable car's top station and leads via the Säga meadows, the Stelzer exit and Totabühel through light woodland and over snowy Maisäß meadows, in places beside the ski track, and back to the miners' chapel of St Agatha above the Panoramagasthof – endowed by miners around 1400, enlarged in 1507 and the oldest surviving church in the Montafon. 4.35 km, 177 m of ascent, about 2 hours between 1,286 and 1,463 m, moderate because of the rolling terrain; the view goes south to the Rätikon and east into the Verwall. German hiking blogs count it among the finest winter loops in the valley.

From our house 29 minutes by car (car park at the valley station) or bus 650 to Schruns and bus 680 to Silbertal Kristbergbahn, about 35 minutes in all. According to the operator the cable car is expected to run from 11 December 2026 to 29 March 2027 in winter 2026/27, with Advent weekends beforehand. Refreshments at the Panoramagasthof Kristberg (daily 8 am–6 pm in winter 2025/26), the Knappastoba and the Gasthof Kristberg; afterwards a toboggan run or the small loop.
