Maisäß Loop Matschwitz

Matschwitz is a Maisäß settlement at around 1,500 m on the Golm, the family ski mountain of Tschagguns and Vandans, and in winter it can only be reached by the Golmerbahn. The Maisäß loop starts at the middle station and leads on a groomed track once through the settlement: past old Maisäß huts, some of which have become holiday flats, to the listed Matschwitz chapel and back across the sunny hillside meadows. Only 1.53 km and 60 m of ascent – the stated 1¼ hours allow for viewing stops; the loop can be walked in half an hour. The view reaches across the valley to the Verwall with the Hochjoch and Rote Wand and to the Tschaggunser Mittagspitze in the Rätikon. Maisäß settlements were the halfway stage of Montafon mountain farmers between farm and alp, used in May and in autumn.

From our house it is 29 minutes by car to the Golmerbahn in Vandans or Latschau (free parking) or bus 650 to Schruns and the Landbus to the Golmerbahn. The Golmerbahn ran from 6 December to 12 April in winter 2025/26; the operator publishes the dates for 2026/27, and pedestrian tickets are sold at the ticket office. Refreshments right at the middle station in the Haus Matschwitz (in winter according to the cable car's hours, last ascent 4 pm). If you want to walk more, add the 3 km Hüttenkopf winter trail from Matschwitz or combine the trip with the natural toboggan run on the Golm.
