The Kunsthaus Bregenz is first a building and then a museum. Swiss architect Peter Zumthor designed a cube of 712 etched glass shingles; daylight falls through the façade and glass ceilings into three exhibition floors of around 450 m² each, without a single window. Opened in 1997, the building received the Mies van der Rohe Award for European architecture in 1998. There is no collection: the KUB shows three to four major solo exhibitions by international contemporary artists a year, mostly created specifically for the building – in 2026 Cyprien Gaillard until 4 October and Torkwase Dyson from 17 October; in between, the house is closed from 5 to 16 October for the changeover. There are family tours and workshops for children, the building is step-free, and the KUB Café sits in the black annexe.

It is open Tuesday to Sunday 10 am–6 pm, Thursdays until 8 pm, closed Monday; on every first Thursday the evening is free from 5 pm. Admission is €14, €12 with the Montafon guest card, free up to the age of 19 – and if you buy the KUB ticket online in advance, it serves on the day of your visit as a day pass for bus and train throughout Vorarlberg, including the journey from Schruns via Bludenz to Bregenz. From our house it is 76 km or a good hour by car. The vorarlberg museum stands right next door (combined ticket €23), and the lakeside promenade, harbour and upper town are on the doorstep.

💡 Tips & refreshments

English-language guides describe the KUB as a “luminous glass box” – if you are interested in architecture, join one of the architecture tours. The experience depends heavily on the current exhibition; check the programme beforehand. No museum car park – use the harbour car park or, better, the train (buy the online ticket before travelling, then the journey is included).
