Alp Latons

Alpe Latons lies at 1,680 m on the sunny slope of the Bartholomäberg, between the Kristberg and the Rellseck mountain inn. The farming cooperative summers dairy cows, calves, goats and pigs here; from around 63,000 kg of milk the alp makes Montafon Sura Kees, alpine butter and alpine cheese, plus goat's cheese. Sura Kees – a lean sour-milk cheese soured from skimmed milk without rennet – is the speciality that sets the Montafon apart from every other cheese region in the Alps; it is documented here since the 13th century, when cheese was delivered to Chur as a tithe. During the day the hut's terrace serves marinated Sura Kees, cheese platters and fresh milk.

The nicest way to get there is on foot: take bus 680 (about 35 minutes from St. Gallenkirch via Schruns) to the Kristberg cable car in the Silbertal, ride up to the Kristberg and walk about 1¾ hours across the scenic plateau to Alpe Latons. If you carry on, you reach the Rellseck inn in a good hour and the baroque church of Bartholomäberg after another 45 minutes – just under 14 km and around 5½ hours in total, with 550 m of ascent and 900 m of descent. By car it is 16 km and about 20 minutes to the Kristberg valley station. In September the Latons cattle drive in Bartholomäberg draws big crowds, with decorated cows and a village festival.
