Alpilaalpe

Small staffed alp above Tschagguns, a good hour from the Grabs Maisäß: cheese, bacon and Landjäger sausage, home-made treats on fine days.

all year 🌧️ Also in bad weather

The Alpila alp is a small alp high above Tschagguns at the foot of the Tschaggunser Mittagsspitze, where the view opens up over the whole lower Montafon. It is staffed in summer but without a large catering operation: the fridge holds drinks, cheese, Landjäger sausage and bacon, and on fine days home-made products are served. This is alpine farming as it has worked in the Montafon for centuries – the animals graze up here, the farmers come up from the Maisäß settlements and farms in the valley, and hikers are welcome guests on the hut bench.

The approach starts in Grabs, the Maisäß settlement above Tschagguns, and takes a good hour. The alp is also a stop on the circular walk around the Tschaggunser Mittagsspitze, which also passes the Tilisuna alp – a rewarding day tour for experienced hikers with views of the Rätikon and Verwall ranges. From our holiday house it is 11 km and about 13 minutes to Tschagguns (bus 650/651 to Tschagguns Zelfen, or the Montafonerbahn railway to Tschagguns); ask locally about the road up to Grabs.
