Montafon Arlberg Marathon & trail-running events

Mountain marathon from St. Anton over the Silbertaler Winterjöchle to Silbertal (42.195 km, 1,500 m climb) on 27 June 2026 and 26 June 2027 – plus Montafon Totale Trail.

Since 2003 the Montafon Arlberg Marathon has linked two Austrian provinces across the Verwall range: the start is in front of the tourist office in St. Anton am Arlberg (Tyrol), then the course runs through the Verwall valley past the Verwallsee, up over the Silbertaler Winterjöchle at around 1,900 m – you cross the provincial border at the Langsee – and down the upper Silbertal to the finish at the fire station in Silbertal. 42.195 km and around 1,500 m of climbing on forest and hiking trails free of traffic, in the middle of the Verwall Natura 2000 area. Alongside it there are the T33 Trail (33 km, 1,150 m of climb), the Panoramatrail (15 km, 450 m), the “Wandererlebnis” hiking event over the 33 km course and a children's trail. Dates: Saturday 27 June 2026 (23rd edition) and 26 June 2027; the organiser is Montafon Tourismus. The entry fee includes eleven aid stations, a pasta party on Friday, luggage transport, a medal and public transport in Vorarlberg on race day; a shuttle runs between finish and start.

The second running classic starts practically at our door: the Montafon Totale Trail (2026: 4 July, 2027: 3 July) leads from Schruns over the mountains of Silvretta Montafon to the finish at the Nova Stoba above the Versettla cable car – as an ultra with 45 km and 3,780 m of climb, as a trail of 31 or 16 km, or as a 10 km mountain run with 1,200 m of climb from the Valisera cable car in St. Gallenkirch, 2 km from our house. Silbertal is 21 minutes from our holiday house by car, or by buses 650 and 680 via Schruns – the finish in the village is a good place to cheer.

🧭 Route description

Finish Silbertal (fire station): bus 650 to Schruns, bus 680 into the Silbertal, about 35 minutes; by car 16 km. Montafon Totale: start in Schruns or at the Valisera cable car, St. Gallenkirch (2 km from the house), finish at the Nova Stoba (Versettla cable car, Gaschurn).

💡 Tips & refreshments

Both races are high-alpine: observe the mandatory equipment and time limits (marathon: km 28.7 by 14:00, finish closes at 17:00). Places are limited – register early, early birds pay less. As a spectator come by bus and train; on race days village through-roads are partly restricted. The route over the Winterjöchle is also worth doing as a two-day hike with a night in St. Anton.
