For centuries Gargellen also lived from smuggling across the Schlappiner Joch into the Prättigau – the Schmugglerland (smugglers’ land) at the top station of the Schafbergbahn at 2,130 m picks up on that. From there an easy loop of about 3 km runs over the Schafberg, with children following smuggler Luggi: on the “Schleichweg” you walk barefoot over sand, gravel, water and mud, real goats live in the Gäßscherm shed, at the Fernblick station you scan the opposite slopes for ibex and chamois with telescopes, in the customs hut you look for smugglers and customs officers, and the “Marenda” is the well-earned snack break. With children allow about 1½ hours; it suits kindergarten age upwards, while the gravel path is less suitable for pushchairs. Back at the Schafberg Hüsli there is a large playground with nest swing and slackline and a step-free sun terrace with views of Rätikon, Verwall and Silvretta.

In 2026 the Schafbergbahn runs from 12 June to 11 October, 8.30–16.30; a return ticket costs €30 (children €17.40, born 2020 or later free), and the cable car is included in the WildPass. Older children from 10 years and 1.40 m can take a mountain cart down: 6 km of forest track to the valley station, €20.50 including helmet, bookable from 7 a.m. online or at the PME sports shop. From our house it is 12 minutes by car or bus 670 to the Schafbergbahn stop.
