Garfrescha is an old Maisäß settlement at around 1,500 m above St. Gallenkirch-Gortipohl: timber huts, pastures, cows and a wide view over the valley. For children the plateau is ideal because there is hardly any climbing once you are up. In front of the Brunellawirt inn there is a large playground, and this is also where the treasure hunt with the mascot Monti Lux starts: a pushchair-friendly loop of 2.2 km with 70 m of ascent through the settlement to the small Hafa See with its raft and back, about an hour with riddle stations; the treasure map costs €3 at the Brunellawirt. Other places to eat: the Alpenhotel Garfrescha and the Vermala Wirt. Dutch family blogs count Garfrescha among their summer tips for the Montafon.

The valley station of the Garfrescha cable car is only 600 m from our house – you walk there, no parking needed. Summer operation 2026: 27 June to 4 October, 8.30–17.00; in summer the settlement can also be reached by car. If you want to skip the ride down, walk back to Gortipohl on the hiking trail in about 1½ hours. In winter the 5.5 km run from Garfrescha via Grandau to the valley becomes Vorarlberg’s longest floodlit night toboggan run: every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 18.00, last ascent 20.30, sledge hire at the valley station.

600 m on foot from the holiday house to the Garfrescha valley station, ride up to Garfrescha; in summer alternatively by car.

💡 Tips & refreshments

Pushchairs are no problem on the farm tracks, the hiking paths are narrower. Pack sun protection and swimwear for the Hafa See; keep dogs on a lead (grazing cattle). Night tobogganing needs sledging experience and a head torch.
