Climbing wall Lorünser Wändle

The Lorünser Wändle stands at the entrance to the Montafon near Lorüns, where the Ill breaks through the valley barrier – a south-facing limestone wall on which Vorarlberg’s sport-climbing scene grew up. Between 1984 and 1986 Beat Kammerlander opened routes here such as “Delirium Tremens” and “Take it Easy”, 25 m at UIAA 10, and kept coming back in the following decades. The wardens of the Wiesbadener Hütte count about 50 routes, 45 of them at UIAA 8 to 11; the climbing database thetopo lists 39 sport routes in five sectors (Altes Wändle, Dummultt, Erika, Paris Texas, Robin Hood). This is nothing for families or beginners – it is about steep, smooth rock, finger strength and spring or autumn conditions; in summer the south face gets hot.

The area is sensitive: climbing was banned here for a time and, according to thecrag, has been tolerated again since 2009 – on condition that climbers keep a low profile, do not walk through the cement works’ grounds and do not park on the gravel area. Please follow the approach notes of the climbing portals and local climbers. From our house it is about 25 minutes by car down the valley; topos are in the Vorarlberg climbing guide and online. If you are looking for easier terrain, Latschau or Rifa are the better choice.
