Montafon Heritage Museum Schruns

The valley's main museum in a roughly 500-year-old stone house on the church square: home life, costume, workshops, mountain school, Nazi era – under-18s free.

all year 👨‍👩‍👧 Family friendly 🌧️ Also in bad weather

The Montafoner Heimatmuseum is the largest of the four Montafon museums and one of the oldest regional museums in the Alps: the heritage association began collecting in 1906, the museum opened in 1921, and since 1978 it has occupied the roughly 500-year-old stone house on the church square in Schruns – the former assembly house where the mining judges once sat, later used as the district gaol. Over several levels you see an originally furnished dwelling with kitchen, chamber and parlour (including a Montafon table of 1712), traditional workshops and a hammer forge in the cellar vaults, an old mountain-school classroom on the first floor, plus a multimedia exhibition on Montafon costume and an alpine dairy in the shed. The former prison cell is now a room of remembrance for the Nazi era and forced labour in the valley. Temporary exhibitions are added every year – in 2026 the postcard show “IMWANDEL” by the Wolf photo studio from 16 July. There are museum rallies for children, and the house has carried the Austrian Ecolabel since 2024.

It is open from 5 May to 31 October 2026, Tuesday to Friday and Sunday 2–5 pm, in July and August from 10 am; closed Monday and Saturday. From our house it is 9.5 km or 13 minutes; bus 650 and the Montafonerbahn stop at Schruns station, a five-minute walk away. The museum is in the pedestrian zone – the Münster, the Hotel Taube and a café are right next door. The combined ticket is also valid in Silbertal, Bartholomäberg and Gaschurn.
