Münster Schruns

The Münster of St Jodok is the church at the heart of Schruns, on the church square between the Heimatmuseum, the town hall and the Hotel Taube where Ernest Hemingway spent the winters of 1924/25 and 1925/26. A chapel is mentioned here in 1433, a Gothic church was consecrated in 1503; the 42 m tower with its onion dome dates from 1674 and survived the town fire of 1682. The present nave was built between 1865 and 1868 to plans by Johann Mayer: a neo-Romanesque hall without pillars, its timber vault spanning around 20 m. It was painted by the Schruns family of painters Bertle – Franz and Jakob Bertle created the choir frescoes in 1873/74, and Hans Bertle the five ceiling paintings with scenes from the life of St Jodok between 1905 and 1907. The organ was built by Pflüger in 1988 with 41 stops in the case of 1867. In December 2025 six new bronze bells from the Bachert foundry were consecrated; the death bell of 1679 remained. Since 8 March 2020 the parish church has carried the title of Münster.

From our house it is 9.5 km or 13 minutes; bus 650 and the Montafonerbahn stop at Schruns station, from where it is a few minutes through the pedestrian zone. Our suggestion: the Münster, then the Heimatmuseum on the same square and a coffee at the Taube with a view of the Hemingway plaque.
