Parish and pilgrimage church of Tschagguns

On a knoll at the entrance to Tschagguns, just across the Ill bridge from Schruns, stands the parish and pilgrimage church of the Nativity of the Virgin – alongside Rankweil and Bildstein one of Vorarlberg's three Marian pilgrimage sites. The Gothic choir dates from the first building of 1452 to 1454; the nave was extended in 1752 by a southern side aisle and in 1812 to 1814 under Johann Nepomuk Bitschnau, and the 43 m tower with onion dome and lantern took its shape in 1783. The oldest piece is the miraculous altar of 1520. The frescoes with Old Testament scenes were painted by Michael Anton Fuetscher in 1814, the font (1770) and pulpit (1777) are by Josef Vonier, and the upper painting of the high altar is by Franz Bertle. Musically the church is a special case: the organ by Joseph Bergöntzle of Alsace (1816), with 38 stops on three manuals, is built in the Alsatian-French style and was restored in 1994 – which is why concerts are held here regularly. The four bells of 1950 are joined by a death bell of 1671.

From our house it is 10.4 km or 12 minutes; take bus 650 to Schruns and walk across via the Litz promenade, or ride the Montafonerbahn to Tschagguns. We like to combine the visit with the Gauenstein loop to the monastery or with the Ill cycle path. The winter sports exhibition in the Montafon Nordic Centre is a few minutes away.
