Parish church St. Anton i. M.

St. Anton im Montafon is the first municipality in the valley coming from Bludenz, and its church of St Anthony the Hermit tells a long story. In 1376 Otto von Zalans endowed a chapel of St Anthony here as a daughter church of St Lawrence's in Bludenz; it became a curacy in 1412, an independent parish in 1645/46, the parish church was consecrated in 1651 and enlarged with a new tower in 1791. The unusual part came in 1989/90: because the church had become too small, it received a side aisle in steel and concrete to the north, and the entire interior was rotated through 90 degrees – the Baroque high altar now stands against the long wall. Wikipedia attributes the conversion to the second generation of the Vorarlberg school of architecture. The high altar painting of St Anthony with his pig was painted in 1874 by Melchior Paul von Deschwanden together with Franz Bertle, the Stations of the Cross are by Josef Anton Bertle (1843) and the stained glass dates from 1907. A memorial commemorates the Landammann Johann Josef Batlogg, a native of St. Anton.

From our house it is 15.4 km or 20 minutes; take bus 650 to Schruns and the Montafonerbahn to St. Anton – the church stands above the station. Bus 641 links St. Anton onwards with Jetzmunt and Bartholomäberg – together a good half-day among the churches of the sunny slope.
