Showroom in the Lünersee power station

The Lünersee power station in Latschau is one of illwerke vkw's big storage plants: water plunges 974 m from the Lünersee in the Rätikon and drives five machine sets with Pelton turbines, 280 MW in total. When it went into operation in 1958 it was considered the most powerful pumped-storage plant in the world. The visitor showroom in the power station building explains how electricity is generated here and how water is pumped back up to the lake in off-peak hours; a working model of one machine shows the principle, and through the glazing you look straight into the machine hall. For children interested in technology this is more vivid than any textbook, and it takes a good half hour. If you want to go deeper: illwerke vkw offer free guided tours of the plant, but only for registered groups of 10 to 25 people on weekdays.

From our house it is 13.5 km or 19 minutes; by bus take the 650 to Schruns and the 601 on to Latschau Kraftwerk. Right next door are the valley station of the Golm cable car and the Latschau reservoir with its circular path, so showroom, lake loop and a ride up the Golm combine into a relaxed half-day. According to the operator, the showroom is open daily.
