Horse & pony riding (Reitstall Mateera, Ponyhof Sandrell)

For horse lovers there are two small addresses in the upper Montafon. In Gargellen the Familienhotel Mateera has its own riding stable with award-winning, child-friendly Haflinger mares: riding instructors give lessons for beginners and advanced riders, plus nature and adventure rides into the high valley and trail rides onto the alpine meadows of Vergalden. The offer is aimed primarily at hotel guests, who get reduced riding prices; whether and when outside guests can join is best clarified directly with the hotel (+43 5557 6387). Helmets are provided; boots and riding trousers you bring yourself. In Gaschurn the Sandrell family runs a small pony farm listed by the municipality among its leisure offers: children may pet ponies and goats and sit on a pony while it is led – book on +43 664 1421715.

Both places are about 10 minutes from our house: Gargellen by bus 670 or car, Gaschurn by bus 650. Other farms in the valley offer guided pony rides for children, for instance in Schruns and St. Anton im Montafon; the tourist offices have the current list. Prices, times and age limits change quickly at businesses this small, so we do not quote any here – a phone call the day before saves disappointment.
