Above the village of Bürs, opposite Bludenz, stand the remains of the medieval Rosenegg castle. The State of Vorarlberg’s loop climbs from the village over about 2.4 kilometres to the ruin and back; at the top a picnic spot and the view over the Walgau, Bludenz and the entrance to the Montafon are your reward. If you want more, add the Bürser Schlucht – one of Vorarlberg’s most impressive gorges, where the Alvier stream plunges between huge boulders (secured path, approx. 1½ hours extra).

Bürs sits right at the Bludenz-Bürs motorway exit, 25 minutes from St. Gallenkirch – a good stop on the way in or out.

Start in Bürs (village centre), signposted “Rosenegg”; climb to the ruin, loop back to the village.

Landbus Montafon (lines 650/670/680) and Montafonerbahn Bludenz–Schruns; connections at vmobil.at.
