This loop is short but packed with history: from the centre of Gaschurn (979 m) you pass the Posthotel Rössle and Hotel Sonnblick up into the Kilknerwald, where a small stream forms icicles in winter, continue to the tennis courts and cross a bridge to the far side of the valley to Bühel and Unter-Trantrauas, then return along the Illweg. Along the way are stations of the culture and landscape trail: the Geißbargen, the dry-stone walls and hay barns of old mountain meadows, the swathe of the Mottazug avalanche, plus in the village the Lukas Tschofen Stube in the community centre, the Alpine and Tourism Museum in the former Frühmesshaus, the parish church of St Michael and the roughly 500-year-old Tanzlaube above the Ill, the last surviving dance pavilion in the Montafon. 3.35 km, 117 m of ascent, about 2 hours with reading stops, easy; according to the provincial trail data mostly groomed.

From our house 6 minutes by car (parking in the centre or at the Versettla cable car) or about 10 minutes on Landbus 650. The tourism museum, opened in 1992 as the first in Austria, is open on weekday afternoons in winter (as of 2026: Tue–Fri 3–5 pm) – we recommend combining the loop with a visit. Refreshments in the village inns.
