Easy village loop in Gaschurn: from the Maria Schnee chapel (1637) through the hamlets of Ober- and Unter-Trantrauas to the Rifa basin and back – 3.9 km, one hour.

Gaschurn (979 m) is the next village up the valley from St. Gallenkirch, and this loop explores its quiet south side: 3.9 km with just under 80 m of ascent, about an hour. From the centre you pass the Maria Schnee chapel – founded in 1637 as a votive chapel, with an onion-domed tower and baroque ceiling paintings, now a listed monument – and follow the Garnerastraße into the hamlet of Ober-Trantrauas. From there you look out over the Rifa basin, the illwerke vkw compensating reservoir between Gaschurn and Partenen, which in winter is often circled by a cross-country ski track. Via Unter-Trantrauas you reach the neo-Romanesque parish church of St Michael (1869) and return to the centre.

According to the state's winter trail data, the route is partly groomed and partly cleared – an easy, mostly sunny walk with views of the Versettla slopes and the Verwall. Refreshments in the village; Gaschurn's tourism museum – the first of its kind in Austria – is worth a detour. From our house it is 6 minutes by car or around 10 minutes on bus 650 to Gaschurn.

💡 Tips & refreshments

Suitable for families and dogs (on a lead); the short climbs between the hamlets can be icy. If you want more, add the loop around the Rifa basin as a walk beside the ski track – please do not walk in the track itself.

Landbus 650, stop Gaschurn Versettla cable car (approx. 10 min from St. Gallenkirch); ski bus in winter.
