Village Walk from Gaschurn to St. Gallenkirch

The village walk largely follows the line of the former narrow-gauge railway on which the Vorarlberger Illwerke carried material for building the power stations from Tschagguns to Partenen between 1927 and 1961 – passengers were allowed aboard at times, until 1953. Today the route is a fully floodlit lane and footpath along the Ill: from Gaschurn (979 m) with its Tanzlaube, the parish church of St Michael and the Alpine and Tourism Museum gently down the valley, past the Maria Schnee chapel and the Mountain Beach leisure park, on to Gortipohl with the Garfrescha cable car and into the centre of St. Gallenkirch (878 m). 6.73 km, only 42 m up and 144 m down, about 2 hours, easy – according to the provincial trail data mostly groomed, cleared within the villages.

For our guests this is the ideal linear walk: take Landbus 650 (stop 400 m from the house) to Gaschurn in about 10 minutes and walk back; the finish is a few minutes from our door. Refreshments in Gaschurn and Gortipohl; the tourism museum – opened in 1992 as the first of its kind in Austria – is open on weekday afternoons in winter. Thanks to the lighting the walk also works after a day on the slopes.
