Latschau through the Gauertal to the Lindauer Hütte

The Gauertal is one of the finest valley heads in the Alps, and in winter the track up to the Lindauer Hütte becomes a winter hiking trail. From the walkers' car park by the Latschau fire station (around 1,010 m) you climb steadily through the Maisäß landscape past the Gauertalhaus until, after a good two hours, you reach the hut of the DAV Lindau section, built in 1899, at 1,744 m – on a moraine ridge that has so far protected it from avalanches, directly below the Drei Türme, Sulzfluh and Drusenfluh. 13.61 km there and back, 734 m of ascent, about 4½ hours, moderate because of the length; according to the provincial trail data the track is cleared and groomed in its lower part and rolled higher up. If you do not want to walk back, hire a sledge at the hut (€10 per day, limited number) and ride the roughly 6.5 km natural toboggan run down to Latschau.

According to the operator the Lindauer Hütte is staffed in winter 2026/27 from 25 December 2026 to 27 March 2027, and the Naturfreunde's Gauertalhaus (1,250 m, 40 minutes from the car park) in winter 2025/26 from 25 December to 5 April. From our house it is 19 minutes by car (paid walkers' car park) or bus 650 to Schruns and Landbus lines 601/605 to Latschau Kraftwerk. English-language portals call the toboggan run one of the longest in the Montafon.
