Circular walk via Kloster Gauenstein

This is the longer of the two monastery walks from Schruns: 5.3 km, 160 m of ascent, around two hours. From the Kirchplatz you climb via Montjolastraße and Broxweg to Kloster Gauenstein, which stands on a rocky knoll in the Gaueser forest above the Litz. Capuchin friars lived here from 1844; since 2022 it has been home to Poor Clare nuns. The small church of Our Lady of Sorrows was consecrated in 1721 and rebuilt in the mid-19th century. The route continues through the forest to the Landschrofen-Känzili viewpoint, looking down on Tschagguns and the Rodund basins, then descends via the Kaltenbrunnenweg to Kaltenbrunnen station, follows the Illweg to Tschagguns station and returns along the Litzpromenade to the Kirchplatz.

The whole route is part of the state of Vorarlberg's winter trail network and is classified as "cleared" – ploughed free of snow rather than groomed – so spikes are still welcome on icy days. There is nowhere to stop for refreshments on the way, but plenty of choice in Schruns. From our house, bus 650 brings you to the Kirchplatz in about 15 minutes; if you arrive by the Montafonerbahn you can also start the loop at Tschagguns station.
