If you fancy a whole winter's day of easy walking, this is the route: 9.9 km from Schruns (690 m) up the valley to St. Gallenkirch (878 m), 227 m of ascent, a good three hours. From Schruns' Kirchplatz you head to the Aktivpark Montafon, follow the Ill via the Bödmensteinsteg footbridge and the Landbrücke, then pass through the hamlets of Mauren and Unterschrofen and via Galgenul, the lowest part of St. Gallenkirch, into the village centre. Most of the time you walk within sight of the Ill, with the slopes of Hochjoch and Golm behind you and the Grasjoch ahead.

Around two thirds of the route is part of the state's winter trail network (partly groomed, partly cleared); the rest follows minor roads and farm tracks, so depending on snow conditions you may also be walking on packed snow. Handy for us: take bus 650 to Schruns in the morning (15 minutes) and walk back; the finish in the centre of St. Gallenkirch is a good kilometre from our house, or hop on the bus again for the last stretch. Refreshments in Schruns, in Tschagguns and at the finish.
