Schruns to Bartholomäberg
400 m of climbing from Schruns' Kirchplatz to the "sun balcony of the Montafon": via Montjola and the Bergknappenweg to the baroque church of Bartholomäberg (1,087 m).
Bartholomäberg sits on a sunny terrace high above Schruns – and this winter walk takes you up there on foot: 4.7 km, 408 m of ascent, around an hour and a half. From Schruns' Kirchplatz the route leads via Montjola, past the old loden factory, onto the Bergknappenweg and through the hamlets of Galierm, Därfli and Egg to the baroque church of St Bartholomew. The parish is considered the oldest in the Montafon (around 1100); the present church was built in 1729–1743, and its most precious piece is a Romanesque processional cross from Limoges (around 1150), alongside an organ by Johann Michael Graß from the 18th century. The name Bergknappenweg (miners' path) recalls the silver, copper and iron mining carried out here from the Middle Ages to the 16th century.
The path is part of the state network and is mostly cleared, with some groomed sections higher up; its south-facing position makes it one of the sunniest winter walks in the valley, with wide views of the Rätikon opposite. Refreshments in Bartholomäberg; return by Landbus to Schruns or walk back down the same way. From our house, bus 650 takes about 15 minutes to Schruns.

The climb is steady – poles help, and spikes are useful in the forest and on shady bends. Check the bus timetable for the return trip (vmobil.at) beforehand; it gets dark early in winter. The church is usually open during the day.
