Alp Lün

Alpe Lün lies at 1,770 m at the head of the Rells valley, the side valley of Vandans that reaches into the Rätikon below the Zimba. The farming cooperative manages 92 ha of pasture; dairy cows, cattle, calves, pigs and horses spend the summer here. From around 65,000 kg of milk the alp makes Montafon Sura Kees, alpine butter, alpine cheese and semi-hard cheese – everything is sold directly at the alp, and the snacks served are made from its own produce. Sura Kees is a piece of Montafon cultural history: the low-fat sour-milk cheese began as a by-product of butter-making, when farmers skimmed off the cream and did not want the skimmed milk to spoil. While hard cheese in the Swiss style took over in the rest of Vorarlberg in the 17th century, the Montafon stuck to its sour cheese.

In summer you reach the Rells valley by hiking bus from Vandans or on foot; from our holiday house it is 17 km and about 30 minutes' drive to Vandans (bus 650 to Schruns, then the Montafonerbahn railway). From the St Hubertus chapel (1,470 m) an alp track leads over the Gipsköpfle to the dairy alp – around 300 m of ascent, a relaxed half-day trip that combines well with the Rellstal mountain inn. If you climb all the way from Vandans, allow about four hours; from the alp the Heinrich-Hueter hut and the pass to the Lünersee are within reach.
