Alp Spora
Upper Spora alp at 1,739 m in the Gauer valley below the Drei Türme: Sura Kees, butter and cheese from 85,000 kg of milk; refreshments early July to late August.
The upper Spora alp lies at 1,739 m at the head of the Gauer valley in Tschagguns, right beneath the rock backdrop of the Drei Türme and only minutes from the Lindauer hut. The farming cooperative manages 268 ha of pasture within 1,200 ha of alp – one of the largest alps in the Montafon. Dairy cows, suckler cows, calves, cattle, pigs, horses, goats and donkeys spend the summer here; from around 85,000 kg of milk the alp makes Montafon Sura Kees, alpine butter and alpine cheese, which you can buy directly at the alp and try with a snack. Refreshments are served from early July to late August. The Gauer valley is also a textbook example of the Montafon's three-stage farming: from the valley farm via the Maisäß settlements at Latschau up to the high alps, farmers and cattle used to move up and down the whole altitude range every year.
The nicest approach is the Gauertaler AlpkulTour: from the top station of the Golm cable car (Grüneck, 1,890 m) the cultural trail with 13 sculpture stations by artist Roland Haas leads via the Latschätz alp to the upper and lower Spora alps and the Lindauer hut, then down the valley to the Matschwitz middle station – about 12.7 km, 5 hours, 490 m up and 850 m down. From our holiday house it is 11 km to Tschagguns; buses 651/601 run from Schruns to the Golm cable car in Latschau. In mid-September (2026: on 12 September) the cows of Spora, Vollspora, Latschätz, Tilisuna and Hora return to Tschagguns in the cattle drive, complete with a farmers' market.
