Untere Gaflunaalpe
Alpine dairy at 1,380 m at the back of the Silbertal, reached by hiking bus in summer: Sura Kees, butter and cheese from 52,000 kg of milk, start of the Schwarzsee hike.
The lower Gafluna alp lies at 1,380 m at the back of the Silbertal, where the Gafluna valley branches off into the Verwall range. The farming cooperative manages 108 ha of pasture with dairy cows, pigs, horses and donkeys; from around 52,000 kg of milk it makes Montafon Sura Kees, alpine butter and alpine cheese, sold directly at the alp. The stop is expressly family-friendly – animals to look at, snacks made from the alp's own produce and a wide view down the valley. The upper Silbertal is part of the Verwall Natura 2000 area and, with its larch and stone-pine forests, moors and small lakes, one of the quietest corners of the Montafon; the alp is also the starting point for the hike to the Schwarzsee.
In summer the Silbertal hiking bus takes you from the Kristberg cable car valley station to the back of the valley on certain weekdays; otherwise you walk or cycle along the valley road. From St. Gallenkirch travel by bus 650 to Schruns and bus 680 into the Silbertal (about 35 minutes); by car it is 16 km to the free car park at the Kristberg cable car. In early September the cows of the Gafluna and Alpgues alps return to Silbertal in the cattle drive – in 2026 on Friday 4 September around midday, with food and music in the village.
