Vorderkapellalpe

The Vorderkapell alp lies at 1,855 m directly behind the top station of the Hochjoch cable car above Schruns – the area is named Kapell after it. The Oberer family summers dairy cows, young cattle and calves here, plus chickens, ducks and pigs, on 85 ha of managed pasture within 326 ha of alp. From the milk they make fresh cheese, quark and yoghurt, and the terrace serves drinks and snacks of regional produce with views across to the Rätikon. That a cable car arrives up here at all has a history: in 1950 the “four seasons lift” to the Kapell alp opened, and in 1966 the Hochjochbahn aerial tramway replaced it – so the alp has been the first stop on the Hochjoch for over 70 years.

Few alps are this easy to reach: bus 650 from St. Gallenkirch to Schruns (about 15 minutes), five minutes' walk from the station to the valley station, up by the Hochjoch cable car and two minutes on foot. By car it is 9.5 km; parking at the Hochjoch cable car is charged and limited, free parking is at the Zamang lift. From the alp the hikes to the Sennigrat (Sennigrat lift summer 2026: 20 June to 4 October), the Kristbergsattel and the Hochjoch-Totale set off.
