Saarbrücker Hütte crag

Practice rock at the highest hut in the Silvretta (2,538 m) with routes from grade 2 to 5, plus the Kleinlitzner via ferrata (B/C, 2,783 m) – 2½ hours from the Vermunt cable car.

summer · 7-9

The Saarbrücker Hütte (2,538 m, DAV Saarbrücken section) sits on a shoulder of the Kleinlitzner high above the Vermunt reservoir and is the highest staffed hut in the Silvretta. Climbing starts practically at the door: at the foot of the Kleinlitzner there is practice terrain from grade 2 to 5 in solid Silvretta gneiss, which the hut uses for courses and as an introduction to alpine climbing, and above it the Kleinlitzner via ferrata built in 1988: about 140 m of climbing at grade B/C with steel cable, stirrups and iron pins up to the summit at 2,783 m, roughly 40 minutes of pure climbing, descent by the same route. Via ferrata sets can be hired at the hut. From the top, Großlitzner and Großes Seehorn seem close enough to touch.

In 2026 the hut is open from 26 June to 20 September, has 37 room beds and 51 dormitory places and takes cash only. The approach: bus 650 or 10 minutes by car to Partenen, up on the Vermunt cable car and then from the Vermunt reservoir 2½ to 3 hours to the hut; from the Bielerhöhe (tunnel bus) allow 3 hours. The high alpine road on the Vorarlberg side stays closed until 2030 as things stand, and the car park at the Vermunt cable car is closed in 2026 for construction work – please park in the village. This is not a crag for a single afternoon; plan an overnight stay.

🧭 Route description

Bus 650 or 10 minutes by car to Partenen, Vermunt cable car to the top station, then on foot along the Vermunt reservoir and up to the Saarbrücker Hütte (2½–3 hrs); alternatively 3 hrs from the Bielerhöhe.

💡 Tips & refreshments

High alpine terrain: weather forecast, warm clothing, helmet and complete gear are essential; via ferrata sets can be hired at the hut. Reserve beds in advance and bring cash. After fresh snow or when thunderstorms threaten, leave the Kleinlitzner alone.

🚌 Getting there by public transport

Landbus 650 to Partenen, then Vermunt cable car + tunnel bus to the Bielerhöhe (summer 2026: 20 June–4 Oct, uphill 8–12 and 13–16:30, last descent 17:00). Approx. 1 h in total from St. Gallenkirch.

🅿️ Parking
