Rifa climbing wall

Between Gaschurn and Partenen, right next to the Tschambreu tunnel and the Rifa balancing basin at about 1,000 m, the municipality of Gaschurn has set up a crag tailored to families and courses. In the gneiss there are 17 routes between 10 and 30 m high, from UIAA 2 to 8; the wardens of the Wiesbadener Hütte speak of “very easy” routes for beginners and recreational climbers; the base is flat and the wall faces south-west. Added to this is a practice via ferrata with five variants from A/B to C/D, whose main line is a long traverse at grade B/C and a rope bridge – about 30 minutes of climbing, secured with steel cable and clamps. A small hut, drinking water, toilets, a barbecue spot and a play meadow make it an afternoon for the whole family; the valley’s mountain guides hold their basic via ferrata courses here.

It could hardly be easier to reach: bus 650 stops at the Rifa stop right by the crag, by car it is 11 minutes from our house, and free parking is immediately at the rock. The best time is spring to autumn; in summer you climb in the afternoon sun. Your own gear and belaying skills are required; the Versettla cable car in Gaschurn is a kilometre away if the non-climbers would rather go up the mountain.
