The Valkastiel ruin sits above Vandans, and a via ferrata park has been set up around the castle rock: five routes of different length and difficulty (B to C) that can be combined at will. International portals describe it as a “versatile climbing experience” – good for groups of mixed ability because everyone can pick their own line and meet again at the ruin.

Start at the cemetery church in Vandans; the approach is short. For all routes including the way back allow about three hours and 400 m of ascent. Vandans is 15 minutes from St. Gallenkirch by car or by Montafonerbahn/Landbus.

The route leads from Friedhofskirche Vandans via Ruine Valkastiel and back to the starting point.

Start early – summer afternoons often bring thunderstorms. Carry enough water; many huts are only open from late June to late September.

From the holiday house in St. Gallenkirch the starting point is easy to reach by Landbus (stop 400 m away) or car – see the travel notes.

🚌 Getting there by public transport

Montafonerbahn to Vandans or Tschagguns, Landbus to the Golm cable car in Vandans/Latschau (Golm valley station). From St. Gallenkirch: bus 650 with change in Schruns.

Free parking at the Golm cable car in Vandans and in Latschau (mid station/Gauertal car park, partly paid in summer).
