Alpine and Tourism Museum Gaschurn
In Gaschurn's timber early-mass house (early 19th c.): how a mountain village became a resort – first ascents, first guests, ski pioneers; 7 minutes from the house.
The Alpine and Tourism Museum is the nearest to us of the four Montafon museums and sits in one of Gaschurn's finest houses: the former early-mass house on the Dorfstraße, a listed timber building of the early 19th century in interlocking log construction, with a split-shingle roof, a two-flight outside staircase and fretwork window frames. This was once the home of the Frühmesser Franz Josef Battlogg (1836–1900), alpine pioneer and church musician – a fitting host for a museum that has been telling since 1992 how the farming village of Gaschurn became a holiday resort. The permanent exhibition “Willkommen im Montafon!” follows the first mountaineers into the Silvretta, the Alpine Club huts, the first summer guests and ski courses through to today's tourism; temporary shows such as the historic mountain photographs of the Heimhuber photo studio are added. Admission is by voluntary contribution, and the Montafon museums' combined ticket is valid.
According to the operator it is open from 16 June to 26 October 2026, Tuesday to Friday and Sunday 2–5 pm – a rainy-afternoon destination. From our house it is 4.8 km or 7 minutes, and bus 650 stops in the centre of Gaschurn. If you are looking for Hemingway, you will find him not here but in the small exhibition at the tourist office a few steps away; add the parish church of St Michael, the Maria Schnee chapel and the Lukas Tschofen Stube for a village walk.
