Parish church Gaschurn

Gaschurn's parish church of St Michael is younger than its village suggests: a chapel of St Michael was endowed here in 1485, Gaschurn separated from the parish of St. Gallenkirch in 1587, and a Baroque church was consecrated in 1634. That building was demolished in 1867 and replaced by the present neo-Romanesque church designed by Johann Meyer of Schwyz; it was consecrated in 1869 by Bishop Franz Joseph Rudigier, a native of neighbouring Partenen and Bishop of Linz. Inside, the Montafon painter family Bertle was at work: Franz Bertle created the nave ceiling paintings in 1871, the three altars of 1872 are by the Bertle brothers, and Jakob Bertle painted further frescoes in 1905. The Mayer brothers' organ from 1883 has 15 stops and a Romantic sound; the stained glass comes from Tyrol. In the cemetery chapel a fresco by Konrad Honold (1951) commemorates the war dead.

From our house it is 4.4 km or 6 minutes, and bus 650 stops right by the Kirchdorf. Mass is at 10.15 am on Sundays and 7 pm on Thursdays (as of 2026). We suggest the church as the starting point of a walk through the old Kirchdorf with its dance pavilion, the Maria Schnee chapel on the Bühel and the Alpine and Tourism Museum in the former early-mass house.
