Lukas Tschofen Stube

The Lukas Tschofen Stube is a piece of 17th-century Gaschurn domestic culture, fully panelled and today built into the municipal centre that also houses the tourist office. Its showpiece is the portal-like door dated 1681, richly carved and bearing the Tschofen family's coat of arms; the room has been furnished museum-style with a 16th-century chest, a tiled stove and a Montafon table of 1786 – the octagonal table with a slate slab in the middle that is one of the hallmarks of the Montafon farmhouse. That the parlour still exists is a stroke of luck: around 1910 it was considered worthless and was to be burned, but it was saved, left the region via Bregenz and returned to Gaschurn in 1988 when the municipality bought it. Four men over several generations bore the name Lukas Tschofen; the first grew wealthy as a farmer, merchant and innkeeper, and a Lukas Tschofen endowed the Maria Schnee chapel on the Bühel in 1637. Another of the family's buildings, the “Lukas Tschofen Haus” inscribed 1625, also stands in the village.

The parlour can be seen during tourist office hours – in summer 2026 until 11 October, Monday to Friday 8 am–12 noon and 2–6 pm, Saturdays 9 am–12 noon and 3–6 pm. From our house it is 4.6 km or 6 minutes by car or bus 650. Upstairs awaits the Hemingway exhibition, and in the Kirchdorf the Alpine and Tourism Museum and the Maria Schnee chapel.
