Ernest Hemingway exhibition

Ernest Hemingway was 25 and not yet a famous writer when he arrived in Schruns on 20 December 1924 with his wife Hadley and their small son “Bumby”. For two winters – 1924/25 until mid-March and 1925/26 – the family lived at the Hotel Taube on the church square, cheaply and well fed. Hemingway learned ski touring from the ski pioneer Walther Lent, climbed to the Madlenerhaus and the Wiesbadener Hütte in the Silvretta, played poker in the hotel, hunted hares in the Gauertal – and in the second winter revised “The Sun Also Rises” (“Fiesta”), his first major novel. Gaschurn features through the Gasthaus Rössle; the short story “An Alpine Idyll” and the final chapter of “A Moveable Feast” draw on this period, in which his marriage also began to break apart. The exhibition on the upper floor of the Gaschurn tourist office tells the story with photos, texts and documents; the television documentary about Hemingway in the Montafon is shown as well.

The exhibition is accessible during the tourist office's opening hours – in summer 2026 until 11 October, Monday to Friday 8 am–12 noon and 2–6 pm, Saturdays 9 am–12 noon and 3–6 pm. From our house it is 4.6 km or 6 minutes; bus 650 stops in the centre. In the same building you can see the Lukas Tschofen Stube, and the Alpine and Tourism Museum a few steps away rounds off the story of early winter tourism.
