Gortipohl church (St Nicholas)

The small church of St Nicholas is the church of our part of the village, Gortipohl. A chapel is mentioned here in 1499; after an avalanche destroyed it, today's building went up in 1692 with a recessed choir and a north tower whose octagonal belfry carries an onion dome. A bishop figure from about 1690 stands in a niche in the south wall, and a bell from 1486 hangs in the tower. The furnishings range from the high altar painting “St Nicholas before the Virgin and Child” (Franz Josef Bertle, 1852) and altar figures by Melchior Lechleitner (c. 1690) to the Stations of the Cross by Jakob Bertle from 1766. The organ is the celebrity: an Appenzell house organ from the 17th century with six stops and a case from 1766, donated to the church in 1863 – it is considered the oldest organ in the Montafon.

From our house it is 1.8 km, a walk of about 25 minutes along the Alte Landstraße; bus 650 stops in Gortipohl. Mass is on Saturdays and Tuesdays at 7 pm (as of 2026, Pfarrverband Innermontafon). We like to combine the visit with the “Luaga, Losna und Stuna” themed trail, which passes the church, or with an evening stroll down to the river Ill.
