The Three Alps Loop is one of the most demanding circuits in Gargellen's signposted running network: 10.1 km, 678 m of ascent and descent, high point 1,926 m. From the cable-car car park (1,406 m) the route first follows the Suggadin stream up to the Madrisahütte, climbs on to the Obwaldhütte and traverses to the Kessl-Hütte on the Gargellenalpe. Through the Gargellner Alptobel ravine it rises to the Täscher area – the highest section, above the tree line with views of the Madrisa and the Rätikon peaks – and drops via the Ronggalpe back into the village centre. Underfoot you have forest and mountain paths with gravel sections plus short stretches of tarmac in the village; the roughly 2¼ hours in our fact box is a guide value for brisk walking, at running pace it is considerably quicker.

Several huts along the way serve food in summer, so the loop works well as an alp run with a break. We recommend a morning start: the long climb is still in the shade then, and high-summer thunderstorms usually build only in the afternoon. From our house in St. Gallenkirch it is 12 minutes by car or about 20 minutes on bus 670 to the Gargellen Schafbergbahn stop; parking at the valley station is free.

💡 Tips & refreshments

Mountain paths above the tree line need sure footing; poles and at least a litre of water are sensible, and walkers have priority on narrow sections. If the weather turns, the descent via the Ronggalpe to the village is the shortest way down.

🚌 Getting there by public transport

Landbus 670 Schruns–St. Gallenkirch–Gargellen (hourly), stop Gargellen Schafberg cable car; approx. 20 min from St. Gallenkirch.

🅿️ Parking

Free parking at the Schafberg cable car in Gargellen and at the end of the village (Vergalden).
