Aquastiege Tschagguns
914 steps beside the pressure pipeline: the Montafon's shortest vertical – 1.3 km and 385 m of ascent from Aktivpark Tschagguns to the Wirtschaft Bitschweil.
The Aquastiege is not a running trail in the usual sense but a staircase: 914 steps climb beside the pressure pipeline of the Gampadels power station from the valley floor at Tschagguns-Zelfen up to the hamlet of Bitschweil. The route is only 1.3 km long but gains 385 m (674 to 1,060 m) – a pure vertical of the kind mountain runners and skiers use for training. It starts at Aktivpark Montafon, the sports centre of Schruns-Tschagguns; after a few hundred metres you reach the small power station, then it is step after step up through the forest, looking back over the valley floor. The 30 minutes given is a guide value – if you run the stairs you will be faster, walking them takes closer to 40 minutes.
At the top is the Wirtschaft Bitschweil, an inn on the Tschagguns “sun balcony” (2026 summer season from 8 May, closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays). There is no cable car here: the way back down is the Bitschweilstraße road or, as an extension, the Bitschweil Loop circuit. The cool morning hours suit the stairs best; in rain the steps are slippery. From our house it is 11 minutes by car, or take bus 650/651 to Tschagguns Zelfen or the Montafonerbahn train to Tschagguns.
