Buchenwald Loop

The Buchenwald Loop is the easy-going circuit in the Schruns-Tschagguns running network: 8.3 km with only 174 m of ascent between 674 and 810 m, graded moderate because of a short climb on the Buchwaldweg. From Aktivpark Montafon it follows the Ill promenade downstream, climbs into the hillside forest at Stiefen and follows the Buchwaldweg above the valley before returning through the centre of Schruns. Two waypoints there come with history: the Maklott-Haus with its pink Art Nouveau façade, remodelled around 1900 for the grocer Peter Franz Maklott, and the old loden mill on the Litz, which wove cloth until 1970 and today hosts exhibitions as an industrial monument. Underfoot you have promenade, forest track and pavement – no technical ground; the 1 hour 34 minutes in our fact box is a guide value at strolling pace.

The loop suits the morning before breakfast or an evening run when the valley floor is in shade; the Ill promenade is fine to run even in the heat. Water is available from the fountains in Schruns. From our house it is 11 minutes by car, or bus 650/651 to Tschagguns Zelfen or the Montafonerbahn train to Tschagguns – the train is also handy for combining the loop with shopping in Schruns.
